Computer Ports

The physical connection points (Sockets) in on a computer’s motherboard or case that allow it to interface with external devices (Peripherals) like keyboard, mouse monitors printers and networks for data transfer power and communication is called computer ports.


1.       USB (Universal Serial Bus)



Used for almost many types of output and input devices.


2.       HDMI / display port

Called High-Definition Multimedia Interface. This port is used to connect monitors and displays to send high-quality video and audio (multimedia projector digital TVs, and digital speakers to the computer)


3.       RJ-45 (Ethernet



This port connects computers for wired network and internet connections.


4.       Thunderbolt (USB-C based)




Has a high-speed data transfer, video and power over one port


5.       PS /2


Connect the keyboard and the mouse to the computer system. Purple port used to the keyboard while green color port is used to the mouse. However today most of the keyboard and mouse are used to connect to the computer via a USB port.


6.       Serial port



This port is used to connects devices such as modem [  (Modulator-Demodulator) is a device that connects your home network to the internet] to the computer. Transfer data sequentially. Today, USB port is used instead of using the serial port. 


7.       Parrel port



Connect peripherals like printers, scanners and external drives to the computer system. Faster data transfer than Serial ports.
